Local Know-How
Moving in Newport Beach: bridges, alleys and beach season
More than half of Newport Beach is water: 23.8 of its 52.9 square miles. Many homes sit on islands or the Balboa Peninsula, so a move starts with the route in. Balboa Island connects to the mainland by a short two-lane bridge, and Collins Isle by a one-lane bridge. The Balboa Island Ferry carries three cars at a time, so a moving truck uses the bridges. Lido Isle's only link to the city is a small bridge.
Balboa Island kept the grid of small lots and narrow streets and alleys it was laid out with, so where the truck can stop and how far the crew carries matters more than the size of the home. Tell us the street and any alley access when you ask for a quote.
Parking rules change with the season. Most paid parking runs 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, and some lots, like the Balboa Pier lot, charge around the clock. Newport Island streets are permit-only from May 15 to September 15, and Newport Heights has 2-hour limits on school days. To reserve curb space for a truck, the city issues a temporary street use permit for up to 14 days, and Police Dispatch has to be told about the reserved spaces.
Beach season changes the traffic too: city lifeguards watch close to 10 million beach visitors a year, and Balboa Island grows from about 4,500 people in winter to nearly 10,000 in summer. From Irvine, the usual way in is Jamboree Road and MacArthur Boulevard; the Peninsula is reached by Pacific Coast Highway or the Newport Boulevard (SR-55) bridge.

FAQs
Moving in Newport Beach: FAQ
How much do movers cost in Newport Beach?
Local hourly starting rates are $129 for a small move (2 movers, 1 truck), $164 for a medium move and $199 for a large move. Your quote confirms minimums, travel and materials for your Newport Beach move.
Do I need a permit to reserve street parking for a moving truck in Newport Beach?
To reserve street or sidewalk space, the city issues a Temporary Street/Sidewalk Use permit (Public Works) for up to 14 days. You notify Police Dispatch of the reserved spaces, and a copy of the permit goes on the dashboard of each vehicle allowed to park there. Tell us where the truck will stand and we plan the move around it.
Can a moving truck get onto Balboa Island?
Yes, over the bridge: Balboa Island connects to the mainland by a two-lane bridge (Collins Isle by a one-lane bridge). The ferry carries only three cars and isn't a route for a truck. The island's streets and alleys are narrow, so share your address and alley access with your quote and the crew plans where to stop and how far to carry.
What time do you not have to pay for parking at Newport Beach?
Most of the city's paid parking runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, including weekends and holidays, so street meters are usually free outside those hours. Some lots, like the Balboa Pier lot, charge 24 hours a day.
Is it cheaper to hire a moving company or use PODS?
It depends on how much you do yourself. With a container, you pack and load it (or hire labor to load it); with movers, the crew loads, drives and unloads. Ark's local hourly rates start at $129, and we also offer labor-only loading and unloading for containers and rental trucks. The city has no page specific to containers on the street, so ask Public Works before placing one there.
Can you move a condo with a building reservation in Newport Beach?
Yes. Share the building's move reservation window, elevator and loading-area rules when you request a quote, and the crew plans the job around them.
