Local Know-How
Moving in Irvine: villages, HOAs and the city's truck rules
Irvine is laid out as villages separated by six-lane roads, each with homes of a similar design and its own shops and schools. Many village neighborhoods are governed by homeowners' associations: Woodbridge, for example, has a master association with smaller sub-associations. Before moving day, check your association's rules for gate access, move hours and where a truck may stand.
City code allows a commercial truck of 6,000 lb or more on a residential property only as long as it takes to pick up or deliver, which covers loading and unloading. A storage bin or metal container on a public street, sidewalk or roadway counts as a nuisance under the city's code unless it is expressly permitted, so a container belongs on your driveway.
Summer is hot inland: the average high is about 88°F in July and 90°F in August at the Irvine Ranch weather station, so heavy moves go better early in the day. Move-ins also cluster around the school calendar (Irvine Unified's traditional schools start August 18, 2026, and UC Irvine's fall quarter begins September 21). I-5, I-405, SR-73, SR-133, SR-241 and SR-261 all run through the city, and a move from Northwood to Turtle Ridge is about 8 miles.

Before your Irvine move
- Check your HOA's move rules: gate access, allowed hours, and where a truck may park.
- In an apartment community, book the move time and any elevator or loading area with the leasing office.
- Keep a storage container on your driveway: the city treats one in the street as a nuisance.
- In summer, start early; inland highs average around 90°F in August.
- Moving near the start of the school year or UCI's fall quarter? Book early.

FAQs
Moving in Irvine: FAQ
How much do movers cost in Irvine?
Local hourly starting rates are $129 for a small move (2 movers, 1 truck), $164 for a medium move and $199 for a large move. Your quote confirms minimums, travel and materials for your Irvine move.
What are the hidden costs of hourly movers?
With hourly movers, the total depends on more than the hourly rate. Ark's rates start at $129/hr for 2 movers and a truck, and they're the same whether you pay by cash or card. Under California's rules for hourly moves, billable time is the loading and unloading time plus double the drive time between your pickup and drop-off. Minimums and packing materials are confirmed in your written quote before moving day.
Can I leave a storage container on the street in Irvine?
Not without the city's express permission: Irvine's code lists a storage bin or metal container on a public street, sidewalk or roadway as a nuisance. Put it on your driveway instead, and ask your HOA whether it allows containers. Ark can load or unload a container for you as a labor-only job.
Can a moving truck park at my home in Irvine?
Yes, for the move itself: city code allows a commercial truck of 6,000 lb or more on residential property as long as it takes to pick up or deliver. Your HOA or apartment community may add its own rules for gates, hours and where a truck can stand, so check them before moving day.
Do you charge travel time for an Irvine move?
Irvine is our home base, so drive time to your pickup is short. Under California rules for hourly moves, billable time is loading and unloading time plus double the drive time between pickup and drop-off; your quote shows how it applies to your route.
