Local Know-How

Moving in Orange: Old Towne, Chapman and the east hills

Old Towne Orange is the largest National Register historic district in California: about a square mile around Plaza Park ("the Circle"), with California bungalows, Craftsman and Mediterranean homes, many built before 1920. Since 2025, its streets and city lots have paid parking from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, with 3- to 4-hour limits, and the Orange International Street Fair fills the Plaza, Chapman Avenue and Glassell Street every Labor Day weekend.

About 54% of the city's homes are single-family detached, more than in Anaheim or Santa Ana. Some streets need residential permits. Placing any object in a city street counts as an encroachment, which needs a permit from Public Works with a certificate of insurance, so a storage container is simplest on your driveway.

Orange isn't one solid block: Villa Park is a separate city surrounded by Orange (ZIP 92861), and Orange Park Acres, Olive and parts of El Modena are unincorporated county areas with county rules. The I-5, SR-57 and SR-22 meet at the Orange Crush interchange on the city's southwest edge, SR-55 runs through it, and the 261 and 241 toll roads serve east Orange. From Irvine City Hall, Orange City Hall is about 10 miles up SR-55.

  • Check whether your street needs residential permits, and register online ahead of time.
  • Keep a container on your driveway; anything placed in the street needs an encroachment permit.
  • Confirm whether your address is in the City of Orange, Villa Park or a county area.

FAQs

Moving in Orange: FAQ

How much do movers cost in Orange?

Local hourly starting rates are $129 for a small move (2 movers, 1 truck), $164 for a medium move and $199 for a large move. Your quote confirms minimums, travel and materials for your Orange move.

I live in a building in Old Towne's paid parking area. Where can I park?

Residents of buildings in the paid corridor on Glassell Street and Chapman Avenue can get a residential permit to park free in the city's lots. On moving day, tell us where a truck can stand so the crew can plan around the paid spaces.

Will paid parking be in effect during special events in Orange?

Paid parking is generally suspended for special events that close the Plaza completely, like the Orange International Street Fair on Labor Day weekend. That weekend draws about 400,000 people, so it's a hard time to move in or out of Old Towne.

Can I put a storage container on the street in Orange?

Only with a permit: the city treats any object placed in a street or the public right-of-way as an encroachment, which needs a Public Works permit and a certificate of insurance. A driveway is simpler, and Ark can load or unload the container for you as a labor-only job.

Do you move homes near Chapman University?

Yes. Tell us the street, any stairs and where a truck can stand, especially in Old Towne's paid-parking blocks next to campus.
