Destination Guide
Moving to Las Vegas: what to know
- Desert heat on I-15 is hard on electronics, candles and vinyl — pack those to ride with you.
- Many Summerlin and Henderson communities are gated with HOA move rules; check them before your truck arrives.
- High-rise condos on and near the Strip usually require a reserved freight elevator and a certificate of insurance.
- Weekend traffic on I-15 through Cajon Pass and Baker can add hours — plan your timing around it.
- Driving a rental truck yourself? Load heavy items low and toward the cab and strap each tier: the I-15 grades are long.

The Route
The drive: I-15 over the Cajon Pass
- From Orange County, the usual way is the 91 or the 60 east to I-15, then north over the Cajon Pass through Victorville and Barstow.
- Past Barstow it's open desert to Baker, then the Nevada line at Primm, about 40 miles short of Las Vegas.
- There's little between Barstow and Baker: fill up and carry water before that stretch, above all in a loaded rental truck.
- Nevada is on Pacific time, the same clock as Orange County, so loading and delivery times line up.
After you arrive in Nevada
- Switch to a Nevada driver's license within 30 days of moving.
- A car never registered in Nevada needs a VIN inspection before it can be registered.
- In the Las Vegas Valley, most gas cars need a passing emissions test before registration. Cars on their first three registrations and electric cars are exempt.
- Registration needs insurance from a company licensed in Nevada: California coverage isn't accepted.
